you're absolutely right.
This was cropped from a bigger picture in which other objects were in focus. Even if you try to photograph the flame alone, it is nearly impossible to focus on it a) because of the brightness, and b) the constant shifting of the flames
Kp. Not to say you are wrong, but it's possible and proved by many, that it's easy one can get a sharp pic of flame, by using a large aperture and ISO and manual focus.
